WELCOME

This Web site features my new book, Painting Life: The Art of Pieter Bruegel, The Elder. Beautifully illustrated with thirty-seven color plates, Painting Life shows how the “something more” in Bruegel’s art brilliantly captures the universal conditions of conflict, work, play, folly, and chaos, as well as innumerable pieces of biblical and folk wisdom. In the book you will find out why scholars have long considered Bruegel to be the anthropologist and social philosopher of art, par excellence, and why millions of people continue to find his paintings compelling, even today.

On this site you will find an excerpt from Painting Life, updated information on events and signings, and the latest book reviews as they become available. You may also use this site for feedback, so I invite you to engage in a dialogue with me about the “something more” that can be found in Bruegel’s art. In particular, I would like to learn whether or not you have a favorite Bruegel painting, and if so, what it is. My email address is robert@bonnbooks.com. I look forward to hearing from you.

Painting Life is available in bookstores and online at
www.amazon.com.
